DOGFLAPS FIELD NOTES

Gundogs & hunting dogs

A partnership in the field.

Gundogs work with their handlers to find, flush or retrieve game. Different breeds and individual dogs suit different roles. Retrievers are associated with bringing game back; spaniels with searching cover and flushing; pointers and setters with locating game. Training, temperament and the handler’s skill matter as much as a breed name.

Start with steady foundations

Build a reliable recall and calm handling using reward-based training. Introduce retrieving in short, supervised sessions and seek an experienced trainer for specialist work. Training dummies and a consistent whistle can support a structured programme.
